Mask Crusaders Equipment Donation for Frontline Workers

March 28, 2020
Williamsport, PA
For Immediate

Williamsport, PA – Mayor Derek Slaughter has partnered with Mask Crusaders to offer equipment donations to frontline workers battling COVID-19. Below is a press release from Mask Crusaders:

“As the COVID crisis escalates, frontline workers who are not able to self-isolate are left with limited resources protecting them. Artists, builders, restaurants and others who had to shutter their businesses during the crisis have materials on hand. We are calling for those with materials to donate to those in need.

If you, or anyone you know, have any supply of needed equipment such as gloves and masks, please consider donating them to those on the frontline of the COVID-19 Pandemic at bit.ly/MaskCrusadersWilliamsportPA-Donations . Thank you for standing in solidarity with one another.

Frontline workers can receive donations by finding what they need on the form bit.ly/MaskCrusadersWilliamsportPA-Recipients and then reaching out to them directly to pick up. It is really simple and fast, no go-between, so we were able to “collect” and “distribute” over 3,000 units after launching it this weekend, with thousands more available for pickup at any given time!

Notes From the Mayor’s Desk…

Mayor Derek SlaughterAs the first month in office ends, I want to share some of what my administration has been working on. I will provide updates on a regular basis as part of my promise to be transparent and to keep everyone informed.

Our initial focus has been on buttoning up city finances and evaluating our general organization. There are a number of contracts and agreements we have been reviewing to update and improve contract language. These agreements include the Hiawatha, Endless Mountains Transportation Authority (EMTA), the Williamsport Parking Authority and others. Additionally, we are filling administrative positions as well as updating the appointments and reappointments to various boards throughout the city.

In the coming weeks and months, we will be sending out request for proposals (RFPs) as part of the Strategic Management Planning Program (STMP). This program is being made available to Williamsport through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED). STMP will assist us in developing and implementing a multi-year financial strategic plan.

I have spoken with other PA Mayors whose cities have participated in this strategic financial planning process. Their endorsements have been strong and clear.

By using STMP, we will manage our tax dollars more effectively. Better, smarter financial management is the end goal. We will soon publish new RFPs for professional consulting services and legal services. Our goal is to steadily review and strengthen the proposal and contract language for all of the City’s contract needs.

We have very good news to support our commitment to make Williamsport’s city streets
safer:

  • The City’s first K-9 officer will be hitting the streets in the very near future. We
continue to receive donations in support of our K-9 program and those donations are
making a difference for our community.
  • City Council approved a new hire to add an additional officer to our police
    department.
  • City Council recently approved the purchase of software that will assist our police
department in completing a professional accreditation program.

There are challenges facing our city. My administration is just getting started; we intend
to move quickly to establish higher standards for department and program management
that will provide a more transparent and open government. Positive changes have
started; we will continue to move forward.

Brandon Park Tennis Courts

Brandon Park Rehabilitation Project Underway

Brandon Park Tennis CourtsThe Brandon Park Rehabilitation Project is underway with the completion of the resurfacing of the tennis courts.  The courts look great and they are ready just in time to enjoy some fun fall play!  The lighting system for the tennis courts will soon be renovated to include new controls, LED luminaires and reconstruction of the deteriorated concrete bases.

The remaining scope of work for the project includes the resurfacing of the parking lot next to the Bandshell and the installation of a Nature Play play area.  The Nature Play portion of the project will improve the natural habitat of the park with the use of native trees, shrubs, grasses and wildflowers.  Additional landscaping and tree planting will also take place.

Nature PlayThis project has been made possible with funding from the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and HUD Community Development Block Grant funds.

In the future, the City will be doing renovations to the Brandon Park Bandshell that includes brickwork, structural repairs, and handicapped accessibility improvements.  The City was fortunate to receive a grant for these improvements from the Williamsport Lycoming Community Fund and the Dr. Randall F. Hipple Fund at the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania.

Brandon Park is a unique treasure in the City of Williamsport that offers natural beauty and recreational options for all to enjoy.  The City is excited to have these opportunities to make Brandon Park even better!
