Williamsport became the seventh fastest growing metropolitan area in the country in 2010, according to figures released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.
The economic growth ranking is measured by percentage change in real gross domestic product by metropolitan area.
"I'm very proud," Mayor Gabriel Campana said. "I believe our plan to improve the city is working. It's a comprehensive, hardworking plan. These results don't just happen by themselves."

Williamsport was recognized in two different national publications this past month for two different reasons.
Williamsport was featured in the March edition of National Geographic Traveler and was noted in the "Murals & Music Route 15 Artisan Trail." It was also featured in the March edition of Outdoor Life Magazine in the article titled, "Top 200 Towns for Outdoorsman."
"This shows that we have a breadth of activities that can almost attract anyone," Vince Matteo, president and CEO of the Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber of Commerce, said.
Matteo said the recognition from the magazines is also good from an economic development standpoint. "One of the things we trumpet the most is quality of life and these are two quality of life issues that show how many different things there are in the county," Matteo said.
Jason Fink, executive director of the Lycoming County Visitors Bureau, said that this recognition shows that there is a variety of things to do in the region.
Fink was instrumental in helping with the National Geographic Traveler article and began working with the Pennsylvania Tourism Office last fall to help supply information.
Outdoor Life magazine ranked Williamsport and Lycoming County the number one town for outdoorsmen in Pennsylvania and ranked it 128 in the nation.
